Little Bit of a Splurge

I got a bit of a bonus this year when hubby surprised me with a gift earlier this year...a bag of my choice (within a reasonable budget, of course)! Wow, how would I choose? Which brand do I covet? Which style is more me?

Well, after many hours of bag hunting online and in store (well, I only know of Holt Renfrew to check out designer handbags and the staff there are such a snooty bunch, I made the decision to shop in the US for my new purse), I finally narrowed it down to 3 brands: Balenciaga, Chloe or Prada.

I want a bag that is not widely carried by the masses, such as the much seen Louis Vuitton, about town. Everywhere I look, I seem to see a flash of damier or monogram canvas on a woman's shoulder or clutched in her fancy little hands. But not for me, as classic and timeless as the LV bag is, I want my first splurge to be less noticeable and more practical.

I demand a lot in a handbag. I require it to be structured (so not to lose shape), roomy (for my big wallet and Benna's snacks), easy to carry (with a long top handle and shoulder strap), durable (a smooth wipeable leather), and a classic brand (not too trendy).

For Balenciaga, I liked the Giant Velo with the big, metal studs. Yes, more on the trendy side, but still a classic. Balenciaga has pioneered the strong, edgy look of a motorcycle bag and made it an icon.

For Chloe, I really liked the Paraty because of it's unique style. The handle is not structured and the strap is not cross-body, but the uniqueness of the bag made it a lustful want for me. And especially in the python version, I was in love! But the price did not love me back. There are less expensive versions in the Paraty collection, but the snakeskin is what really got me. It's such a beautiful bag. If it ever goes on sale or appear on Beyond the Rack or Gilt Groupe, I may have to do something evil to get it. Haha!

And lastly, Prada. Such a classic label and lots of classic styles to choose from. This brand is always stands out to me.  I was pretty bummed when I missed a Prada sale on Beyond the Rack a few months ago that featured a black satchel that was mostly vinyl with leather parts to it.  It was a great price (55% off, I think) but there was only one and it went fast!  I didn't even get a chance to put it in my "shopping bag".  So I was more than excited when I found Saks carried a similar bag in an all leather version!  They had both a camel color and the black that I wanted.  But again, the price was over my budget and so I bookmarked it and visited frequently to check for a sale.  Well, lo and behold, that day came!  Today, it actually went on sale!  I was hesitant at first because I've never actually held it or tried it on, but I was certain this was to be mine.  Well, it's a good thing I didn't hesitate very long and just bought it because within 30 minutes of purchasing it, it was sold out online already!  Crazy!

It meets all my handbag criteria and I can see myself using it everyday! I am looking forward to receiving this in the mail, though I had it shipped to my US address to save on duty and taxes. I will definitely have a new post once it arrives! Yay!

Union Food Market

I was intrigued by an article that ran in the Vancouver Sun last week (May 25th) about a little secret gem in the Strathcona area on Vancouver that serves up delicious, homemade Portuguese pastries. The article, titled "The Secret Treats of Metro Vancouver: Orange fritters" was alluring enough for me to stop what I was doing, read the article in full and actually put a note in my calendar to check it out next week. Well, that day came earlier than expected as I was near the area today with hubby and Benna so we stopped in for a little munchie.

This place is as cute as can be. The area is tucked away near the little park off Venables (where they train K-9 dogs for the police department, I forget the name) and close to La Casa Gelato (famous for their many exotic flavours). One would think that the address on their website is wrong because all around Union St. are residences upon residences. But there it stood, just like a favourite neighbourhood dwelling, a cute little market nestled in a tiny cul-de-sac between townhomes and small detached homes. I would never think to venture here for some of the best pastries I've ever had. But now that I know where they are, I will definitely be crossing the Second Narrows Bridge more frequently.

I came in hoping for some of the coveted orange fritters that the article raved about, but I knew they would be sold out. And they were. A fresh batch to be made not until Monday. Boo for me.

But I had the munchies and I needed something to tie me over. There were cod cakes, shrimp cakes, samosa and fried chicken in the heated home goods cabinet. In another were the pastries: cookies, egg tarts, scones and other baked goodies. I had eyed the egg tarts when I came in as I knew they were Portuguese egg tarts from their browned, caramelized top. So I ordered one of those and a chicken samosa for hubby. The nice lady behind the counter said I would love the egg tart. I was quite excited to check it out for myself.

We left the shop and I tore open my little paper bag enclosed tart and sunk my teeth into it's yummy goodness. Oh my gosh...HEAVEN! It was like creme brulee in a pie crust! The custard was not eggy at all (like it's chinese egg tart counterpart) but was creamy and slightly sweet. The caramelized sugar on top melded well with the pastry crust to create this chewy, slighlty crispy bite. Delicious!

I ran back in and ordered 4 more to go! I needed to have this taste again tonight and more later...if they lasted! The lady inside smirked when she saw me re-enter the store..."more tarts?", she asked? I smile and just said, "yes, please" and held up four fingers, excitedly.

As for the samosa, my hubby loved it too. It was less of an Indian style samosa, the flavours were different but all the main ingredients were there: ground chicken, peas and potatoes. I'm not sure what the spices were but they did work well together and made a delicious savoury treat.

I will be back for sure to check out the other homemade goodies that makes the neighbourhood come back for more. What a great find!

Sick, yet again

So i am sick again, for the 3rd time already this year.  Making me wonder if I should get myself checked out as I seem to catch viruses way too easily.

I woke up Thursday morning with an awful sore throat and some muscle ache, but I just figured I had a dry throat and I was sore from boxing class the night before.  So, I took Benna to school and went to my session with my trainer.  She worked me hard and I felt every muscle in my body ache afterwards.  Just common fatigue, I thought.

Well, later that afternoon, I had to meet with our builder and architect to source out tubs and faucets for our new house and I could really feel the fatigue sinking in.  Every minute that passed felt like an eternity and I just couldn't wait to get out of there.  Two hours later, we were finally done and I headed straight to my parents house to get some rest.

As soon as I entered I collapsed on their bed and fell asleep for the next two hours.  I felt no better when I woke so I knew I was sick with something.  

It's been 3 days now and I'm no better than the first day.  Went to see a doctor and he said I had a nasty virus and there was nothing he could prescribe me, oh and it should take 7-10 days to clear up.  Um, excuse me?  7-10 days??  I have my Anthro special event by invite only tonight and box seats to Game 1 tomorrow!!  How the heck am I supposed to get better by then?

Well, I guess I won't be.  I ended up cancelling tonight, after much reluctance.  But am happy that Marz is going in my place.  And I'm drugging myself silly tonight so I can go to the game tomorrow.  There is no way I am missing the only opportunity I will have to attend a playoff game, not to mention the 3rd series which the Canucks haven't been in since 17 years ago!  

Anyway, I'm done my rant for now.  Let's just say I'm a lot disappointed in my body for not being able to handle viruses very well.  Hmphf.

South Granville

Spent the afternoon strolling through South Granville today to get a glimpse of the newest retail addition to the already fashion-filled strip. Vancouver's first Anthropologie stores will be opening it's doors on Friday, May 13th and I wanted to snag a picture of it's store front so I can write about it on my Anthro blog (see post here).

On my way back to my car, I couldn't resist checking out Potter Barn Kids since I had Benna with me too. I am more of a fan of Restoration Hardware's kids stuff, but there were a few things that caught my eye there today. And Benna had a great time playing with their play kitchen and ice cream and cake sets. Too cute!

I wanted to take all sorts of cute, pink things home with me, like the Polka Dot Phone and the Princess magnetic doll set, but the prices were too ridiculously high for what they were were. I just bought a couple cute plastic plates and glasses and a sprinkling rubber ducky for bathtime that were all on sale. But I still managed to spend $30.

I thought I was done with shopping and was on my way back to my car when I turned the corner and saw Bedo calling my name. I was drawn into the store by a cute pair of cargo capri pants with gathered hem. So cute! They reminded me of a pair of Hei Hei pants I missed out on at Anthro a couple months ago. And I don't have a cute white pair to wear on cool summer evenings so I thought why not check them out.

Well, an hour or so later, I have a Bedo shopping bag filled with a beautiful army green rain coat (I actually do need one for this dreadful wet weather of late), a cute denim tunic that can be worn so many ways, plus those capri pants in army green. Yes, I already have 2 other pairs of army green pants from Anthro, but this one made my butt looked nice and small and any pants that can do that definitely belongs in my closet! They were so awesome that I have the white pair on hold, in my size, at the downtown location to be picked up tomorrow.





Oh, and last but not least, I also swung by the Canucks store at Roger's Arena and lucked out on getting my hands on a Women's Canuck jersey in the size small. They were sold out everywhere when I called this morning and just happened to swing by the store hoping for a T-shirt, when I saw a rack full of the size smalls. Apparently, a surprise shipment arrived that day and they literally just unpacked it for the shelves. What luck!


So, I guess today was a shopping day for me, unintentionally. But I guess that's why my sister calls me a shopaholic. Lovely things seems to just fling themselves at me when I'm out and about. Well, this purchase has put me out for the next couple of weeks and I can not take anything home with me on Anthro's opening day. Oh well. I hope I can do my hubby proud and keep the wallet shut on Friday. Will power don't fail me now!

Late Night Wanderings

So I am totally going to regret staying up this late as tomorrow is a school day, which means 7:30am wake up and going to the gym at 9:30am too.  Ugh.  But I can't sleep, so what is a girl to do?

What I Did Today

My day started out pretty slowly with my little girl (let's call her Benna), watching TV while Mommy figures out what she will do today. I got out the Cheerios, milk and fruit and laid it on her little table as I switched the TV to Treehouse for some preschool cartoon fun!

I decided to cook. Other than breakfast, I decided to make Classic Split Pea with Ham soup (using my mom's ham bone from Easter dinner). I ran out of split pea so I supplemented the soup with italian dry lentils instead. And I ran out of fresh garlic so I used a few generous pinches of garlic powder. After a few hours of simmering and stewing, lunch was made! It turned out pretty good despite the few adjustments. I've made this recipe quite a few times now (everytime my mom decides to cook up her famous ham, she saves the bone for me) and I think I'd better put the recipe to rest as I don't want to get sick of it already. I think I've made pea soup 10 times in the last year. That's a lot of ham bones! I've asked my mom to keep it to Easter and Christmas only as it makes it more special this way. (Pics will be added later as my iphone just died for the night.)

Benna and I also made it out to the library and I picked myself up some travel books on Turks and Caicos (our family vacation this year, yay!) and Benna picked out a ton of books, but I cherry-picked which ones actually came home with us. I'm glad she likes the library as this will be my new rainy day activity for her. And from the looks of the weather forecast, we shall be visiting the library quite a few times this week!

We watched the Canucks beat the Predators out of Series 2 tonight, which I'm pretty happy about! Hubby won the weekly playoff ticket draw at the office for Game 7 of Series 2, but now that the Canucks have won, I am hoping that automatically wins us Game 1 of Series 3! We shall see, I guess. Don't want to get too excited.

Tomorrow is a school day for Benna. Hope she wakes up liking it tomorrow. It has been such a battle since we moved to North Vancouver and she started a new school. Quite understandable, of course. But still frustrating. I'm starting to run out of patience with the whining and the crying first thing in the morning. But I do feel for her, she takes so long to adjust to new things. Really long. I hope she grows out of that so life can be a little easier to handle for her.

As for me, I've got my first cardio workout since last Tuesday. I'm going to be regretting skipping last week's workouts for sure. I'm pretty certain boxing will kick my butt tomorrow, but it has to be done. I'm going to Turks and Caicos (see photo) in September and I have to look decent for our travel pics this year. I want to start posting them on Facebook and here, of course!

Anyway, that is my day for today. Oh, and I'm super excited about Anthropologie opening up this Friday on Granville Street. There was a contest of sorts, that I found a little too late on Facebook, asking people to say why they are excited about the Vancouver Anthro opening. The selected winner will receive an invite to the Grand Opening party that Friday night. I emailed past the closing date, but hopefully that will be overlooked. Mother's Day

Today was a beautiful day!  And I don't mean weather-wise because it was just ok.  It didn't rain but it wasn't sunny either.  

No, today was a beautiful day because the two LOVES of my life made me feel like a princess today on my 3rd Mother's Day!  From the moment I woke up (and I slept in too!) I was showered with love and hugs and kisses!  I received a beautiful card, a trip to the spa, a beautiful orchid (which is perfect because I don't really have the patience for flowers), and a wonderful seafood brunch at The Boathouse!  The day could not have been more perfect!

My magnificent hubby did everything for me today.  I did not lift one finger and it was heaven!

Thank you to my lovely, adorable daughter and perfect, handsome husband for making me feel so special today!  I couldn't ask for a lovelier day.  I love you both infinity-naire!
